Mary Middlefield and the heightened artful reality of "Young and Dumb" (studio and LIVE)

"used to be scared of you / you've grown closer to my heart / I give you ever single piece of me / you use them to destroy me..."

The intense sonic drama of "Young and Dumb" by Lausanne, Switzerland based singer-songwriter, musician Mary Middlefield is a beautiful blend of a lot of things. The barrage of sounds that may or may not be about an abusive relationship or a battle of bloody wills or a metamorphosis toward self actualization (???) blends genres, textures from 90's sort of post rock, 80's baroque pop, gothic darkness, art rock, bedroom all into an iteration that might, in my head, feel more like a wild inspired performance art piece than just a song. The musical breaks with post hardcore intricacies that have the fervor of an emotionally wrought action movie, the poetry that itself feels, at times, like romance wave and body horror all at the same time all feels like red velvet cinema with blood splashed on walls.

Am I the pain you laugh to?
The joke I cry to?
A piece of meat to eat in your bed
If I don’t bleed I don’t grow
Is that something I deserve?
I have a modest number
Of days left here with you
I’ve been in love with you forever
I’ve since lost all of my feathers
Your fists speak louder than words

To continue to try to describe what is happening on this track would be pointless and just ruin the first time listening experience for anyone reading this. It is a wonderful creation. A lot of times I veer toward raw types of songs and this is not that. This (to me) is more of a heightened reality to me: emotions, actually experienced or inspired by events, distilled into an artful impression. For some reason it feels graphic novel-esque, the story that is.

"Young and Dumb" is from the upcoming EP, ‘Poetry (for the scorned and lonely),’ out April 26th, 2024.

We are fortunate to live in a time filled with singer-songwriters who turn their pain and joy of their personal lives into art. Mary's voice and vision are marked by the richness and complexity of her folkloric compositions mixing rock, pop and classical musical influences.
