Vilde and the mercurial melancholia of "Subpar sentiment, cracking skin, a gene forgotten so long ago"

"offering / a thought / that doesn’t count / taken for given / a lure of clout / Fessing up another pound / feet upon a trembling ground..."

The mercurial melancholia of "Subpar sentiment, cracking skin, a gene forgotten so long ago" by Vilde, the project name of  Melbourne, Australia born / Stockholm based songwriter, musician, artist, nomad Thomas Savage, feels, from the onset, like ghosts from the past. While upfront acoustic guitar and Savage's compelling vocal countenance pushes the song forward, behind the percolations there are drones of sounds like dark memories. I truly love Savage's vocal character, the artful way he pronounces some words that give them an emotional adhesion maybe like a band aid:

Offering, a thought, that doesn’t count
taken for given, a lure of clout
Fessing up another pound, feet upon a trembling ground

When the beat and sonic build up's happen, the melancholy does not subside really but hints of survivorship rise up like the morning sun on bright synth melodies but not before the first chorus happens:

Another win, trailblazing
fellow creature, wishing you well
A gene forgot, so long ago, a lesson learned

I love the curious poetry at the core of this track. I would be fibbing if I told you what "Subpar sentiment, cracking skin, a gene forgotten so long ago" is about and I like how the words and tones leave the meaning up to interpretation or maybe it is more than that, maybe it is a sonic reflection and reveals things to all those who listen in totally different ways. I have said from the very beginning of this music blog that songs are really sonic Rorschach tests after all.

Weathering a pattern under tin
Subpar sentiment, cracking skin
Fessing up another pound, feet upon a trembling ground

LINER NOTES:

Vilde, aka Thomas Savage, is a songwriter and performing artist from Melbourne, Australia. Immediately upon finishing High School, he co-formed a lounge-pop group (Oh Mercy) and toured extensively. After a few years, at the age of 23, he decamped to Brighton, UK to form the rock band Kins. By 2015, after much touring, Kins had run a natural course and was laid to rest. At this point, and now living in Stockholm, Thomas founded Vilde. A trusty solo outlet for such a nomadic lifestyle, which has now seen Vilde release 5 LP’s, whilst moving between Stockholm, Melbourne, Düsseldorf, Norwich & lastly, Edinburgh.
