The East coast indie rock / funk punk crunch of "Eat Your Heart Out" by Brooklyn based SKORTS is an inviting art punk drink that goes down easy with a massive burning kick in the back of your throat (so to speak). It is the blend and urgent emotionality that kicks here. From the addictive bass line, stabby chunky alt rock guitars, punchy sort of power pop meets classic post rock drumming and Alli Walls' truly electro magnetic vocal throttle, there are things in play that suck you in that are even hard for me to define and I have been dissecting music /sounds for a long, long fucking time.
I think for me (and I have written about SKORTS a few times before) there is a potent mood that they create, an amalgam of what might feel like it was seeded out of pre-eighties proto punk and peppered with dance punk, 80's power pop and romance wave, 90's post punk and especially sort of cerebral punk or art punk. The early Talking Heads aesthetic that spawned the term "new wave". All this with contemporary iterations of the same, a patina of sultry self empowered spunk for good measure and glitter ball disco dust (just a little bit, ha). By the way, the Official Video for "Eat Your Heart Out" is fire.
