Richard Strater and the emotional travelogue of "The Land of Palmetto"

"take me back / to Alabama / take me back..."

The timeless emotional travelogue of "The Land of Palmetto" by Camden, South Carolina singer-songwriter / musician Richard Strater pulls you into it's frayed memories, nomadic or otherwise. Apart from the truly moving folk rock atmospheres I can't help but feel Strater's vocal performance, that, well, doesn't feel like one. Strater is able to imbue so much presence and character here that it feels as if his words are flowing instantaneously, like he is not singing memorized words but fresh words recounting dozens of dioramas and the things contained in each cardboard box. Enhancing this song are the musical layers that has as much to do with instrumentations as they have to do with the airy ambience they cast off.

The dense production doesn't feel like one because the song has breathing room between the beautiful falling piano notes, the nylon guitar strumming swells, percolating banjo, shuffling drums, other orchestrations and a wonderful female vocal harmony.

Great stuff, moving stuff, the stuff of a life lived and how the places we have been to is the connective tissue that binds us all together.
