Shady Oaks and the massive emotional weight of "Hate Me" (Official Video)

"so many lies / too much time..."

The massive distorted guitar slides of "Hate Me" by Denver-based alternative rock band Shady Oaks at first glance made me think of U2's "Bullet the Blue Sky" if done by Metz or Tropical Fuck Storm. It sounds gorgeous and bad ass at the same time AND, quite frankly, apocalyptic in it's all encompassing nature especially turned up loud. Not only this but it sounds exquisitely dirty, amped up emotionally and since songwriter, vocalist, guitarist Ty Gallaway shares that 'Hate Me' "is a fuck you to my ex wife who took my money in a divorce and the assholes that were on her side", the added gravitas as fuel to the vocal fire that you can feel within Galaway's acidic throat curdling wail (and even during quieter moments of reflection too) all acts as that extra back story kick in the gut. Gallaway along with Isaac Vance (guitar), Jonah Samp (drums), Sarah Hubbard (violin), Ian Arras (keys) and Hunter Bates (bass) craft an absolute furiously mean track with toes dipped in a kind of dark gothic folk psychedelic psychosis with sharp bit of alt metal and garage rock atmospheres.

Denver-based alternative rock band Shady Oaks is returning on November 3rd with their new single, “Broken Mirrors.” In the year since their last release, 2022’s MAD, the band has had the chance to calm down a little, to process the angst and anger that permeated that EP and focus on looking inward. This is not to say that their music doesn’t still feel like the sky cracking open, lightning coming down from the heavens and striking a glass of Buffalo Trace dripping onto a dirty bar. Shady Oaks’ new single feels like staring deep into that glass and finding the face of an ex-lover contorting itself as the ice melts, their memory simultaneously accusatory and comforting. It’s the feeling of taking the next steps propelled by those that have come before like looking at the horizon at dawn and running towards it to rid yourself of the night
