Joybomb and the ferocious alt rock artfulness of "Nanoplastique" (Lyric Video)

"Absorb in my brain / We like it this way / Permeable membrane / Nano-plastic buffet..."

Pushing play on Joybomb's crunch thrill "Nanoplastique" and the sheer massivity of it is gleefully impactful. Beyond the maniacal smile on my face, I immediately flash on long buried memories, the iconic 70's Maxell Blown Away Guy and Cheap Trick's 1977 New Years Eve Show at the Long Beach Arena in LG, California (to this day, the loudest rock show I have ever seen). Be assured, my friends, that the absolute heaviness here is just but one of the brilliant sonic facets beaming off of this musical gem. The longer you listen and especially after repeated listens (and you will listen repeatedly) you fully realize the complex artful blending and sonic atom splitting happening here. YOU feel (hear) alt rock power, heavy metal tonality, power pop rock explosiveness, post hardcore emo dynamism, art rock abstractions with baroque filters and classic sort of fantasy rock wonder. It is all there and like an amalgam of artists as diverse as Eagles of Death Metal, Black Sabbath, Cheap Trick, My Chemical Romance, The Hives, King Crimson, Hawkwind, the artistry, in terms of rock vastness runs deep.

If you have noticed I brought up Cheap Trick two times in this piece and that is purposeful. The slamming guitar breaks on "Nanoplastique", something like G# to G / D# to F (or thereabouts) does feel rather Rick Nielsen and full throttle vocalist Grant Beatty with such amazing killer pipes does remind me of Robin Zander's potent tenor rock voice. It could just be me and in any event Beatty's vocal countenance, however you cut it, it stunning not only in his ability to wail but also in it's emotional context theatrically. It is like he puts himself in a particular emotional space, very art rock to me.

LINER NOTES:

[This new single tears straight out the gates on its mission to serve up a tongue-in-cheek homage to a world consumed by microplastics. Leaving absurdity exposed in its wake, the scathing takedown of environmental degradation invokes the more dangerous of spirits.]

"Nanoplastique" is from the band's upcoming EP "Modern Scripture" due to drop August 23rd.

MORE LINER NOTES:

"Modern Scripture" continues the group’s mission to further the hard-nosed melodic punk and charged social commentary of their 2022 debut LP American Cult Candy. On this outing they dial it in even further; doubling down on playfully deviant religious tropes juxtaposed to themes of bottomless consumer culture, chemical escapism, absurd political theater, and tragic romance. This EP sees the band reunite with producer Matt Qualls (who also produced Joybomb’s 2023 standalone singles “Tell Tale Boys” and “Visions!”). Tracking took place through the spring of 2024 at Qualls' Easley McCain Recording in Memphis, Tennessee.

"Micro-party parade
Biohazard soirée
Polyethylene terephthalate
It all tastes the same"

"Absorb in my brain
We like it this way
Evolution appears to have ricocheted
It all tastes the same"

Joybomb’s upcoming Modern Scripture EP finds the band reinforcing their hard-nosed pop punk sensibilities and charged social commentary they displayed with their 2022 debut LP, American Cult Candy and follow-up singles last year. For the new outing, the Memphis rockers double down on playfully deviant religious tropes juxtaposed to themes of bottomless consumer culture, chemical escapism, absurd political theater, and tragic romance - all while doling out melodies built for driving fast as f*ck, sonically unafraid to deviate, laying guitar hooks like landmines throughout the 6-song album. Modern Scripture has the quartet teamed up again with producer Matt Qualls, resulting in a sound that’s huge and truly articulate of the Joybomb sound.

Joybomb aims to deliver what they deem the essentials by straddling the lines of pop-sensibility, clever indie punk, and unabashed hi-fi rock’n’roll oblivion. Undoubtedly with Modern Scripture, they keep it on brand.
