"mistakes were made / you can be untrue / but you know that it's on / your mind too..."
The conflicting sandy and silky atmospheres of "Divine" by Los Angeles indie rock outfit Brain Club has me all in and dancing with my two left feet. These guys, here, and on their debut eponymous album, that for complete transparency I only have yet perused briefly, based on this contagious track, are crafting a sly, swanky, emotionally engaging, utterly cool blend, a cross generational multi-genre blend that encompasses everything from synth pop, pop / western pop noir, indie rock, 80's new wave, dark wave, 90's post punk, rock ballads and baroque pop and distills it in a pretty compelling drink. A drink that could make you drunk but more likely will make you find your one pair of pleather (or leather pants) and super dark shades before dust off the electric guitar in the back of your closet.
Listening to "Divine" with it's bass distortions, machine beats and drums, its upticking cadence, sparkling yet spooky synth lines, cool evocative vocals and throttling kind of western rock guitar and I thought of sounds, of an amalgam of artists like The Holydrug Couple, Spoon, Pond, Duran Duran, Editors and more, besides the chorus is so fucking 80's new wave. Lovely stuff, truly.
Check it out while I check out the album again over time, so I can swim in it.
