"We keep waiting on a train that's never coming / We might die waiting for it, waiting for it..."
The crystalline airy guitar lines of "Counterparts" by Boston indie rock band Divine Sweater draw you in immediately, followed by the anchoring bass and drums as a potent dreamy framework for Meghan Kelleher's evocative vocal countenance. The feeling, the magnetic atmosphere (to me) suggests 80's / 90's post punk, twee, jazz dipped alt pop blends like an amalgam of artists like Cocteau Twins, Fazerdaze, The Cure sprinkled with a dash of Burt Bacharach.
"We keep slipping off to secret hideaways
Where we go, never know, never say
We keep slipping off to secret hideaways
Where we go, we'll never know, never say"
Where we go, never know, never say
We keep slipping off to secret hideaways
Where we go, we'll never know, never say"
The heavenly sense of rays of light cascading through darkness, the ambience of movement counter positioned against melancholy lyrics and somber horns mirror the angst and ambivalence of youth AND the beautiful hope that's worth looking for too. I seriously love this.
"Counterparts" is one of three tracks released from the band's "A Time for Everything" album set to drop September 13th, 2024.
