Luke De-Sciscio and the provocative sonic imagery of "Spinning"

"You / You were / In a public bathroom / Somewhere in a mall in Manchester / Up North / In a stall / Barefoot / Balling your eyes out..."

It is clear from covering much more than a handful of folk indie juggernaut / cosmic poet Luke De-Sciscio's works, bloodletting, points of catharsis and artful self actualization moments that there is a clear demarcation of his journey, BT and AT, namely 'Before Theo' and 'After Theo'. Theo is Robyn's and Luke's baby girl born March 30th of this year and as all empathetic parents know, our little miracles transform us in deeply complex ways. Complex threads, spider web like connections that infiltrate our past and future, with our presents forever feeling more deeply felt with more at stake for obvious and not so obvious reasons.

LukeDe-Sciscio's 17th album "Theo" speaks to those connections and existential threads and I thought of all that while listening to the track "Spinning".

Luke shares:

"Taken from the new album "Theo", a series of live vignettes captured in the bedroom-recording studio shared by my young family. This album was recorded in the first 6 weeks of my first daughter's life"

Now, get this, "Spinning" and all the precious moments on "Theo" within 11 tracks are all voice and guitar tracks done in first takes, recorded live with only one single over-dub on the entire album. Amazing and hard to wrap my head around but then Luke always manages to do the seemingly impossible.

Conceptually, "Spinning" feels like a living breathing entity, speeding up, slowing down, rabbit holes and suspensions in mid air, all the while having moments of balled up fists and open hands, of standing your ground and of relinquishing everything to unbound fate. The sonic imagery is stuffed full of drama but thankfully somewhat vague, as it should be, and there is a duality to the lyrics too or, maybe even, a secret tell like you might find in an M. Night Shyamalan film. Stunning and provocative.

LINER NOTES:

"THEO" (the new album) -

In 2024, inspired by the birth of his daughter, Luke De-Sciscio once again felt the impulsive inspiration that drives him to write so passionately.

11 songs recorded in opportunistic sessions over the course of the first 6 weeks of his daughter's life, "Theo" is the sound of a young man discovering his fatherhood...

An expose on the fears and insurmountable love that one feels suddenly faced with the vastness of new life.

Steeped in rich and insightful poetry that dares to be fearless in its pursuit of truth. Be it the appalachian dexterity of his guitar playing or the divinely tethered conviction of his voice.

With "Theo" Luke De-Sciscio offers an uncompromising vision, spun almost entirely of first takes, recorded live (with only a single over-dub).]

UK folk-singer Luke De-Sciscio found his song-writing voice the old fashioned way; by writing, and mostly not releasing, dozens upon dozens of original songs, a journey that began on a boat with no electricity or heat.

Since those early days Luke De-Sciscio has gone onto record a catalogue of work which is unified, always, by one unremitting characteristic: the ceaseless and at times devastating search for truth.

His is a spirit that favours expression over perfection, fearlessness over convention and authenticity over marketing. And that candid approach has garnered him a burgeoning and loyal fanbase who, drawn by his unique voice, insightful lyricism and devotion to music, have enjoyed 15 full length albums over the course of his short career.

Recording often times into a single microphone in an effort to capture the very first rendition of every song, Luke has found a recording style outside the norm, that allows him to release sometimes as many as 4 albums in a single year.

Of those records, there are those which are most notable and those which served to move a feeling aside but of Luke De-Sciscio there can be no denying; when he is in the pocket, the World stops to listen.
