Pseudopomp and the jammy, tightly wound bottom heavy verve of "23"

"23, oh 23 / It'd be better if we were 23 / Probably, probably..."

The bottom heavy tightly wound verve of "23" by London-based alt-rock duo Pseudopomp feels raw and big but somehow precise and intimate at the same time. The alto rock heaviness and power pop  inclinations feel sort of classic and could have existed any decade since the 90's in terms of artistic temperament and indie rock cred. While I hear the incredibly jammy bass work and supercharged lead work that might feel as art rockian as anyone for some reason the sound feels most seeded from late 2000's fully realizing that all songs are sonic Rorschach tests that likely reveal more about the listener than the creators. In other words, you might just as easily feel connections from the 90's or from only a few years ago.

The sonic flavors are neither here nor there but (more importantly) that Pseudopomp's exquisitely jammy nature will surely satiate the artistic thirst of someone who has adoring eyes for Wand as much as they do for Melody's Echo Chamber or Pond or The Breeders just to name a few. A lot going on here, indeed. A lot of artful shape shifting.

"Save, save me
Look on upon this wasted time with grace
Change, change me
Til everything just falls right into place

And all the things we could've seen
Before the reins began their tightening
Must fit inside a trite routine

The lives we cut from the insides
Of pages in a hoarded magazine
Sweet flavours of the in-between"

LINER NOTES excerpts (bracketed):

[Pseudopomp release their debutsingle ‘23’ on 12th July. The track is a feverish, anthemic, indie-rock salute to the great (and wildly unrealistic) expectations of early-stage romance, meshing sweetly confessional verses with an explosive garage rock chorus.]

[The artwork took inspiration from an unlikely source: an infographic in The Economist, tracking the financial trajectories of their two home countries, Greece and Bulgaria. In some ways, ‘23’ tells the story of how Pseudopomp came together, so they couldn’t resist a bit of gallows humour by referencing their home teams’ similar -albeit dysfunctional- merging.]

[The duo met in 2021, as members of another band (and playing other instruments). But as after-hours jam sessions yielded song after song, they decided to give their surge of creativity its own outlet, and
Pseudopomp was born. ‘23’ will be followed by a string of releases, all recorded with long-time
collaborator Ben ‘Faz’ Farestvedt of Damage Audio.]
