"look at me in all my glory / don't you think I'm the prettiest thing / and I'll cry if I have to / and I'll lie if I need to..."
The tender moments of "Glory" by Seascouts, the musical moniker of Hamburg, Germany based singer-songwriter Jenny Nguyen are many, floating around you in embracing ways. The pearly guitar sounds with it's thoughtful hesitations and stair stepping chord shifts serve as an emotional engine for personal reflections sung beautifully by Nguyen. Her vocal lilt intimate, sometimes held up with ethereal backing vox and self harmonies feel dream pop lush. When more orchestrations wash in, the emotional ebbs and flows feel subtle and organic. The production embellishments are perfectly served up, nothing feels overdone, no false steps. I love this because I received hundreds of submissions that, well, maybe don't know when to leave it alone production wise.
Nguyen shares this about "Glory":
"It is about me falling in love with another girl, but due to her homophobic upbringing, is unable to love me to the fullest. Throughout the song I am begging for her to love me, to publicly show me affection and that she should leave all that she has known behind. I wanted to do everything possible to keep her, but in the end, she chose the comfort of her upbringing over me. I couldn’t blame her. I glorified her into someone that she could’ve been, but wasn’t. And that’s what this song is about."
In the end, "Glory" sneaks up on you, maybe like love itself, maybe even like unrequited love. Nguyen's lyrics as confessional poetry stands well enough alone as a moving relatable piece of work but as the heart of this song it might just invade you in such a deep way that passages will arise in your head at odd times. The sign of something in the collective consciousness, the sign of something special.
