Instrumental surf-rock from Portland, ME ft. legendary Carand Burnet, as featured in Bandcamp 'most notable' 2023
The proggy reflections and airy whitewater surf rock breaks of "Sun Fish" by Portland Maine based Kioea, a hybridic indie rock outfit lead by guitarist / sitarist Carand Burnet and supported by Neil Collins on bass & Matt Wilson on drums, floats on shape shifting arrangements and spacious guitar apparitions. The sense here is organic and even though the song is mostly an instrumental, Burnet's non lexical singing as in, ooohs and aaaahs with surfy grooves and hanging electric strums somehow adds to the noir sound, a throwback to 60's surf music like The Shadows or Link Wray but filtered through more contemporary iterations. The rolling bass and drums dance with a forward cadence that feels easy but potently drawn as a framework for Burnet's salty guitar moves. Like a long ride on a disruptive wave, the sonic narrations changes and mutates. I am loving the soulful backbeat, the skips and hops and daring cutbacks.
"Sun Fish" swims on Kioea's latest EP, "Electric Surf" that radiates from Carand Burnet's diversionary visions gently blending psych rock, surf rock and Eastern music atmospheres.
LINER NOTES:
[Listening to genre-defying albums like Alice Coltrane's "Journey in Satchidananda" and The Moody Blues' "In Search of the Lost Chord " shaped the creation of Electric Surf. These albums, along with studying North Indian Classical Raga singing, inspired Burnet to incorporate atmospheric layers of tanpura and vocals into the EP.
A commitment to the healing properties of music, instilled through Eastern spiritual practices, has motivated Burnet to create Electric Surf. The artist is grateful to channel this energy in the company of new band members and bring this sound to a broader audience.
Burnet adds: "Music and its mystical vibrations are a healing force. In discovering my singing voice, everything serendipitously came together to create Electric Surf."]
