"Fear the gong, that rumbles deep from / Within us all, corrupted rhythm / Inverted call, the seed of evil..."
The magnetic, rabid sonic debauchery of "Annihilator" by Louisville Kentucky 7 piece psych rock outfit DOOM GONG, and from their 3rd dreamy hybridic shredfest MEGAGONG, is as gloriously heavy and hyper while feeling mind bendingly absurdist at the same time. I mean when I first heard it, not only was I feeling injections of adrenaline but it feeled so wonderfully unhinged that like a song like Thee Oh Sees' pummelling "The Floating Coffin" it felt like a horror punk song (is that even a thing?) even though I think "Annihilator" sounds better sonically and feels heavier and more unhinged in a darkly comedic way. I, in fact, imagined it as the soundtrack to the absolutely bonkers ending climax of Zach Cregger's "Weapons", although I don't want to reveal any spoilers for those who have not seen this complex killer of a movie. Suffice it to say, once the ending is up on YouTube I will have to edit in "Annihilator" for my own bemusement!
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[Formed in 2022 in Louisville, KY by 7 music school nerds, DOOM GONG has made a name for themselves throughout the states with their own home-baked genre: Denim Psych - a hodgepodge of psychedelic rock, jazz fusion, bedroom pop, lofi, contemporary classical music, as well as blood, sweat, and a lot of denim.]
"Annihilator" is from DOOM GONG's 3rd album "MEGAGONG" which is not a one trick pony in any way, while the complex blend of psych rock, alt rock, punk, dream pop, all dipping into off-kilter modes complete with jazz rock fusions, the album has different atmospheres and emotional shades of all sorts.
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[With an intensity that harkens back to the momentum of 70’s heavy metal bands like Motörhead or Black Sabbath - DOOM GONG’s newest single “Annihilator” is a mosh-friendly grab bag of shred guitar, mellotron riffing and lyrics about nothing but destruction.]
I implore you to check out "Annihilator" the Official Video as well as dip into MEGAGONG on DOOM GONG's Bandcamp!

Having only released their debut LP in 2023, DOOM GONG has quickly become a mainstay of the US psych scene. Bringing their energetic and seamless live show to numerous music festivals like Big Stomp (KY) Back Alley Ballyhoo (IN), Expansion Psychedelic Festival (KY), Moonshiners Ball(KY), Crave Festival (KY), Moonshadow Music Festival (IN) alongside heavy hitters of modern rock including The Black Angels, Allah Las, King Buffalo, Bass Drum of Death, Death Valley Girls, HOLY WAVE, Ron Gallo, and many others.
After completing their debut LP, the band took no time off and followed up with their second LP (also in 2023) with the release of “Dream Behemoth”. This album saw the band collaborate with a full jazz big band, and a string quartet not only for the recording of the album, but also for the Nov. '23 album release performance (Live at The Whirling Tiger).
BUT, DOOM GONG isn’t done just yet: the band has a packed 2024 ahead. Including the release of a 3rd studio LP, the aforementioned live album, a slew of singles, many festival appearances around the US and a North-Eastern US/Canadian tour in the summer.
