"Everybody gets what they want / Everybody gets to choose their own font / Everybody gets a house to haunt / Everybody gets so nonchalant..."
The sparkling whimsey and double edged acerbic cuts of "Everybody Gets What They Want" by Happy Dust Gang, a new London England band (Laura, Paul and Erin), mesmerizes with it's rolling dream pop escapism (musically speaking) but as the vocals come out in a sort of way in between a devilish Willy Wonka and a Sunday morning television preacher who smiles way too much, a sense of melancholia starts soaking through gauzy atmospheres. I love the artful dichotomy here and, in fact, have always had a soft spot for this kind of thing. Maybe that is why I love Radiohead and Elliot Smith so much. And it is not to say that the musical side of these artists and Happy Dust Gang are surfacy, anything but. It is just that I love the beauty of songs that feel deeply emotional or deeply pretty that also punch you in the gut a bit (or a lot). Maybe it is a way to deal with and acknowledge the pain that goes hand in hand with living and the struggle to find meaning it all of 'this'.
"Everybody gets what they want
Everybody gets to choose their own font
Everybody gets a house to haunt
Everybody gets so nonchalant
Everybody gets what they need
Everybody gets a page to read
Everybody gets a mouth to feed
Everybody gets it guaranteed
Everybody gets a hand to hold
Everybody gets a pot of gold
Everybody gets to break the mould
Everybody gets their story told"

LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
["Everybody Gets What They Want" is a mellowed-out alt-rock/math-rock gem that sneaks up like a fox in a knife fight. Its laid-back, hypnotic grooves weave through intricate rhythms, while lyrics like "Everybody gets to choose their own font" and "Everybody gets a house to haunt" deliver a wickedly sharp jab at the mundane. This track’s a velvet-gloved middle finger, blending dreamy vibes with a rebellious snarl .It’s a slow-burn anthem for those who think deep and smirk louder.]
[For dreamers with an edge, rhythm obsessives, and anyone who loves music that’s chill on the surface but seething with clever defiance underneath.]
I am curious what else Happy Dust Gang has to offer.
