"Have we lost control? // Can we see through it all // Have we lost control?"
The surreal sonic imagery bending in real time like a psychic enchantment in "Pillars of Creation", by TAS, Australia psychedelic space rock outfit Golden Sunbird, truly takes you on a trip (with or without the use of enhancements). Opening with a curious spoken word against an orchestration of unease and beautiful bewilderment, I have the sense of one of those 1970's independent witchy psychedelic movies between horror and spiritual sexuality. Then when the thumping solid bass and drum beat drive forward, the sense is big bold ambient rock meets psychedelic rock meets post rock stealing glances at the 70's and creative iterations of every decade since (psych rock never dies) but here Golden Sunbird go all in, in terms of the trippy happenings including soundscapes of storms or nature, or maybe even massive ships coursing through space. Listen in your bed with eyes closed (with or without the use of enhancements) and float away.
"Pillars of Creation" is the final track from the band's current EP "Heart Of The Universe". See Liner Notes about the song and the creative process that brought it to life.
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
"This is our first track to feature Narration. Yasmin 'Skylark' came up with the intro narration. we used a songwriting technique David Bowie used to come up with lyrics. First we purchased a Space/Astronomy magazine and then we cut out any interesting words, phrases and lines. We then collated them into the narrative with relatively little extra words. Somehow all the words we needed were in the magazine. The instrumentation of this track was inspired heavily by Pink Floyd's Shine on you Crazy Diamond. I've always wanted to write a song like that with really epic synths and ambience that slowly builds. We also had a lot of fun recording the Choir outro part which included 10 tracks and also a Mellotron harmony line which I think really gave the EP a triumphant ending and also gives a nod to German Space rock legends Eloy. We are looking forward to playing this one live!"
