"I'm falling for the wrong guy / he's just what I made him to be / in my mind / the mystery is what he won't say / and since he left the silence stays..."
The emotional and sophisticated intimacies of "Polar" by 17 year old New York singer-songwriter Amelie Lucille, and expressed through plucked nylon guitar strings, sparse impactful cello and a vocal countenance that moves you with it's vulnerability and pure beauty, feels both freshly drawn and nostalgic maybe seeded from classical 60's / 70's folk iconography. In a previous review of Lucille's artistry I suggested / wondered:
"Lucille might be deep diving into older folk's vinyl collections besides current possible inspirations like a Lizzy McAlpine or Phoebe Bridgers. I mean, the sophisticated vocal melodies could be seeded from 60's, 70's pop songwriters like luminaries Alan and Marilyn Bergman (RIP Marilyn) or voices like Etta James."
AND the stunning folk indie candor, poetry, simple delivery makes for such a moving experience that an oldster like me might say it belies Lucille's age but that, in truth is just an ignorant statement, isn't it.
Lyrically the song takes interesting, surprising, beautiful twists like looking at relationships, romantic longings through a mirror that you can see yourself honestly while seeing yourself how others see you as well, at the same time. I love how those shift happen, when they happen and the fact that the chorus (is there one?) changes shape from the first time you hear it to the second / last time you hear it.
Great, great songwriting and performance. I secretly hope that Amelie will not get tied to a future producer who over-produces her songs.

Lyrics:
I'm falling for the wrong guy
he's just what I made him to be in my mind
the mystery is what he won't say
and since he left the silence stays
The love takes time
I'd rush right in
if it meant he'd be mind
and love is fragile
so I'll hold on
'til you let go
I'm falling for
the right guy
but he doesn't know
who I'm with in my mind
the mystery is what he won't see
but all along I still believe
That love takes time
and love is fragile
so I'll hold on
'til you let
you let
let me go
