"something black was oozing from the coffin / your gang of little birds was swooning and swooping overhead / so i awoke that morning feeling awful / elk in the spotlight / taking my first steps towards that muddled thing that dreams portend..."
A deeply stirring blend of emo indie / alt country, folk gospel, melancholy pop- the curious tug of "The Blackened Ooze and the Little Birds Too..." by Catskill, New York's Big Pleasant, is the kind of song that I wish I wrote and had me scurrying for my guitar under the bed to quickly figure it out and sing my own way. I really love this song through and through from it's sing-a-long aesthetic, from it's sadness, it's moving lyrical content (acerbic bits and all), the vocal melody and vocal countenance and kind of busker punk sensibility. I feel artful adjacent psychic connections to artists like Band of Horses, The War on Drugs, Violent Femmes and the most melancholy side of Counting Crows.
It is the kind of song that I can imagine gracing a very cool indie film about family and faith in the soundtrack during a scene but then the song becoming diegetic with the main characters in tears.
"The Blackened Ooze and the Little Birds Too..." exists as track 4 on the full length album "Songs from Big Pleasant" that dropped this past June.
Below are LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed) as well as lyrics from Big Pleasant's Bandcamp:
LYRICS
something black was oozing from the coffin,
your gang of little birds was swooning and swooping overhead,
so i awoke that morning feeling awful,
elk in the spotlight,
taking my first steps towards that muddled thing that dreams portend,
i just shove my face in the sand
but by the grace of god and low achievement,
all blackened grass, insurance paid out what was owed,
your face a mask,
and outside that church of good intentions,
of broken things and lonely distance people waiting on a second chance,
i held your face
i just held your face in my hands
