full catholic and the blistering operatic art rock shape shifting of "Courage"

"I'm facing all my fears // My greatest fears // Sitting straight // Taking breaths // Having thoughts // And hoping if the opportunity befell // I'd elevate above myself..."

The blistering operatic art rock shape shifting of "Courage", by Minneapolis based Full Catholic, not only defies convention but smashes all expectations. Not only does the emotional tones, sonic shading, sub genres change many times over but the fluidity of the storytelling, narrative has a mercurial quality. On a previous review of full catholic I referred to the guitar work as "devilishly angelic" and maybe those two opposing words could be used to describe this entire song. Vocalist / bassist Dani Michaele vocal performance feels utterly internal as she purges what needs to be bled. She is the kind of singer who (for science sake) I would love to have wired up on all manner of cardiac / telemetry monitoring while she emotes just to see what toll it takes (if any) because what she does feels so emotionally draining to me.

In the final analysis, "Courage" sort of feels like a freewheeling exercise in improvisation while Dani Michaele (lead vox, bass, guitar), Lane Miller (backing vox, guitar, bass), John Caldwell (synth, guitar, backing vox) and Des Lawrence (drums) are somehow psychically connected, a four way mind meld. The song has lilting moments, times when it drifts and dances in wonderful meandering ways, progressive moments of bi-polar happy mania and other times when it totally implodes...

....a dizzying amalgam of artists like PJ Harvey, Pavement, Cocteau Twins, LSD and the Search for God, Cat Power, Television and Tropical Fuck Storm.

"Courage" exists on full catholic's new third album "Things go quiet".

MINNEAPOLIS-based 'full catholic' is a psychedelic folk collective that fell asleep and dreamed it was a folk band that dreamed it was a rock band. Their sound is built around probing social lyricism intensified by vocalist/bassist Dani Michaele, whose gut-dwelling timbre is both at times turbulent and tremulous. Adding a frenzy of guitar and synth to the mix, Lane Miller and John Caldwell weave dynamic lines through wistful atmospherics that transcend alongside the distinctive jangly rhythms crafted by drummer Des Lawrence.

Listeners describe their music as "raw and vivid...a beautifully messy display of vulnerability" [Glide Magazine] with songwriting that “speaks to an enlightened generation forced to endure more of the same out of pure designed resignation” [The Wild is Calling].

Their debut LP 'every dream at once' was listed by Mike Mineo of Obscure Sound in the top 20 best albums of 2022, calling it a “stirring collection of songwriting…and emotively genuine beauty.” The band toured the album extensively in the Midwest while completing their sophomore LP, ""all is well"" released Spring 2023. Their third album 'things go quiet' is out Summer 2025.
