"Perpendiculars // Thought bubbles // Clinging to my skull like thin smoke // Now I know // Which side the bread is buttered // Now I know // Which side the bread is buttered..."
The Faustian nightmare fueled palate cleanser of "Flesh Interface", by Cork Ireland's no-wave outfit Crying Loser, is the perfect brain rattling cocktail for those of us who need to get away from the average pop swill from time to time. This bawdy, feral free form concoction that feels like a collision of industrial punk, funk punk and the guy who screams to himself, at that one Liquor store in town, is the kind of sound that I would have hoped that Trent Reznor evolved to instead of the corporate industrial rock he is slinging now. Am I wrong to feel this way?? This track also feels like the kind of song that might grace a future body horror movie by Brandon Cronenberg, or maybe it would be the song in that movie that causes a rabid infection to anyone who listens to it while wearing headphones (??). Yes I am improvising this review (like it or not).
Anyway, I dig this and am feeling an amalgam of diverse artists like Death Grips, James Chance and the Contortions, Melt Yourself Down, Beastie Boys (or thereabouts) and I encourage you to listen to Crying Loser instead of the new cringe Taylor Swift album.
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[Cork’s no-wave outfit Crying Loser return with their abrasive new single “Flesh Interface” (out 8th October via We Go To 11, a Trapped Animal sub-label) and its gruesomely surreal video directed by Zoë Greenway. Emerging from noisy basement improvisations, the band thrives on raw energy, hypnotic rhythms, and frenzied chaos. The track is a left-field slice of no-wave intensity, drawing comparisons to Crack Cloud and The Lounge Lizards, and perfectly capturing the band’s abrasive yet hypnotic spirit.
Formed by Arthur Pawsey (guitar, vocals), Micheál Fitzgerald (bass), Sam Clague (bass clarinet, flute), and Ruairí de Búrca (drums), Crying Loser have already carved out a reputation with their debut EP Oaf Milk, released in 2023, and high-energy live shows across Ireland and France, including Féile Na Gréine festival. “Flesh Interface” paves the way for their debut album The Ick (Spring 2026), pushing their feverish, chaotic sound further while keeping full control of their work through Trapped Animal’s new artist-led imprint.]

Do you ever stare at the ceiling at night, paralyzed with dread, obsessing over missed opportunities? Everyone is just trying to make some type of human connection, why is it so hard? Crying Loser may be the key to unlocking your full potential and harnessing your inner truth, however depressing that may be.
