Glaascats and the powerfully abstract stabs of alternative rock / moody post punk layers of "Split the Biscuit" (Official Video)

"Somewhere / in wherever land / Everybody /  listens carefully / Whoever raises a hand / Whenever someone's stuck in sand  / No one's got anything to be done / These matters concern everyone..."

The powerfully abstract stabs of alternative rock / moody post punk layers of "Split the Biscuit" by Fribourg, Switzerland birthed DIY alt rock three piece Glaascats, and from their sophomore album "Dust" dropping October 16th (2025), feel so sonically rich and artfully eerie. I am blown away by the sound of the bass as well as the tubular guitar ringing out in space and the snap and punch of the drums as a bold framework for the boy girl / girl boy vocal persona which for me reads melancholy and thoughtful. While I assume that levels of reverb enrich each instrument and vocals, the sensibility (to me) is that of a live ambient, back of a warehouse or church sound, (however it was engineered) and I love that.

The lyrical poetry is curious, a mystery to me and there are not hints from the band as to what are the seeds of inspiration but I don't mind that. These kinds of abstractions are something to revel in, to interpret in a wide array of ways. I wonder if they are about having a collective communal culture where the end goal is to help a society in unison, obviously a totally foreign concept to Americans.

Lyrics

Somewhere in wherever land
Everybody listens carefully
Whoever raises a hand
Whenever someone's stuck in sand
No one's got anything to be done
These matters concern everyone
Step by step hip to hip
All in sync we'd split the biscuit
I vote for nature as president
Moon and sun as selectmen for this town
There's no less light for you than for her,
For I than for you, for them than for they,
For she than for him, than for I, for us than for they,
For you than for I, for them than for they, than for her,
For she than for her, for her than for I, for them than for they,
Than for us, for I than for you, for us than for you,
For them than for they, than for her, for her than them,
For she than for they, for us than for I, than for you

LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):

[Dust is the accumulation of seasons, a 2 year ride upon bloom and decay. A musical journey traveling through bright dark lands catching winds of hope and doubt. Here’s to embracing what is. A finger draws a line through the dust and within, paths unfold.]
