The experimental alt rock / post punk tentacles of "Unit Circle" by Emilia, Italy's alternative stalwarts Julie's Haircut, and from their upcoming album "Radiance Opposition" (dropping November 28 via Superlove & Weird Beard Records), hook you in from the onset with it's electronic come on's and organic orchestrations of sound as a framework for Italian-Nigerian singer and songwriter Anna Bassy's evocative vocal countenance. A relative newcomer to a band that has existed since the late nineties, Bassy joins established members Nicola Caleffi, Luca Giovanardi, Andrea Rovacchi, Andrea Scarfone, and Ulisse Tramalloni in shaping this brand new album, their first full length release since 2019.
"Unit Circle" is a stunning moody work. The pulsations of synths, that, at times, feels like electrical power transmissions, intertwine with shifting collisions of progressive indie rock, neo soul, funk and post punk. The blend feels not only effortless but somehow brings to mind different impactful eras of halcyonic music. The upcoming album inspired by the I Ching, the Chinese book of divination promises an artful, dark and light blend of psychedelia, electronica and polyrhythms and I so look forward to the journey.

Active since the late nineties, Julie's Haircut is a band from Emilia, northern Italy, devoted to spacey, hypnotic sounds. Over the years, their music has evolved through a series of albums and EPs, moving from the garage-rock soulful energy of their debut toward more experimental grounds, embracing a kaleidoscopic eclecticism that spans rock and psychedelia, electronics and minimalism, with echoes of jazz, ethnic music, dub, and drone. They’ve collaborated with artists such as Damo Suzuki, Sonic Boom, Philip Corner, Daniel Higgs, Valerio Cosi, and more.
