"I want to get to know the other side / it looks so faraway / it'll take some time..."
The psychedelic rock tentacles and surfy rainbow ascensions of "Outerside", the very first single from Little Angry & the Sweets' full band debut "Screamin' Inside Your Heart!", feels as fresh as it does nostalgic, I mean as an old surf rat, back in the day, this track would have felt as perfect for iconic surf docs like "The Endless Summer (1966) or "Riding Giants" (2004). Of course, the trippiness, the bending swelling sonics, big guitars and vibrant evocative vocals lends itself to many things all at once, but the salt water vibes are just where my head went, maybe I miss those days. The blistering guitar strokes, in fact, feel sort of Pete Townsend-esque and the song has a kind of artistic, psychic amalgam of The Who, Guided by Voices and The Beach Boys (or similar such artists) in a truly beautiful way.
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[The long-time musical project of Seattle-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Evan Hashi (The Hive Dwellers, Mega Bog, Flying Circles), Little Angry's music mixes pop sensibilities with punk energy, do-it-yourself experimentalism, and psych-rock hypnotism.
'Screamin’ Inside Your Heart!!!' is Little Angry's fourth album, but the debut full-band affair. Recorded with longtime collaborators Jen Weisberg (Hits) and Joe Kuta in a steaming-hot shipping container recording studio in the Oakland neighborhood of Fruitvale, the album captures a certain sweat-covered enthusiasm; three people whose musical connection runs deep, playing songs they've spent years honing.]
[The album takes its title from safety instructions given to roller coaster riders in Japan, in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic (“Please scream inside your heart”). For Hashi, the phrase expresses the paradox of being a generationally-established, “good” immigrant musician in the United States – or in fact, the psychological feedback loop experienced by anyone who is struggling against conditions that bring up intense feelings, and are also forced to repress them.]
As leader, sonic provocateur I am digging Seattle-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Evan Hashi's aesthetic / world building so I look forward to dipping into the other tracks on "Screamin' Inside Your Heart!". I have a feeling it will be a big ride, one that will inspire and allow me to see quirky indie films in my head.

Little Angry is a West Coast American community pop band. A utopian music project attempting to be a tiny swirl of harmony embedded within the crushing dissonance of capitalism and a highly abusive music industry. It's an excuse to eat dinner with friends, and play covers poorly remembered. It's the reason to bake bread and to go to LA and eat elote by the lake every once in a while. Nobody makes actual money here, we just release ourselves, like ordinary pigeons.
