"a little bird in the dirt / remembered her mother / the pedals of her heart where plucked but so tender / so she sang in a tree at night with her eyes open wide..."
The orchestral dialectic peering around metaphysical corners of "Moon", by Brooklyn New York queer indie artist (and sound healer) Elly Kace, plays like a dark and enlightening theater piece about our essence and our vessels. From the onset, there are sonic tensions and poetry that can feel at once unsettling and reverent. The staccato rhythms and prescient piano chords bathed in a blend of baroque pop and slightly askew classical breaths present an uncertain existence for a tiny bird.
"a little bird in the dirt / remembered her mother / the pedals of her heart where plucked but so tender / so she sang in a tree at night with her eyes open wide..."
AND, soon enough with Elly's gorgeous vocal countenance, moving and flamboyant spins her story and spell. That tiny bird artfully ceases to be or at least it's wing's and body withers away as a metaphor for many things. Maybe about the possibility of not existing when alive and existing after death...??
Kace shares this:
"When I deny the facts of death and loss, it reminds me of the same feeling of trying to grasp the majesty of the moon in a photo, and knowing the image cannot hold the totality of it- but still trying anyway. Moon is a medicinal sound story about a bird facing it's mortality and it's loneliness in the context of it's temporary physical experience. Everything changes on the physical plane, everyone leaves, and ultimately our bodies all die. There is reverence and humility in recognizing our physical limits and the vast space of what we don’t know beyond the things we can sense."
In the end, the beautifully vibrant, dynamically rich, emotionally provocative "Moon" for me plays like a mystery, a celebration, a eulogy, unanswered questions and a reason to question at all.
