"do you really feel good with this / do you think that any night exists..."
The beautifully vast, potent persuasions of "89" by Lyon, France indie rock outfit Luje, and from their sophomore full length "Among the Firs", is so sonically rich, running the full spectrum from a kind of endearing late 70's broad pop atmospheres to a potent proggy 90's / 2000's indie rock / post punk / shoegaze throw downs to new contemporary iterations of all of that and more, that it left my jaw gleefully on the floor. I did eventually close my mouth as to not swallow an errant bug.
What makes "89" so magnetic?? The glossy sound from the get go which made me think of iconic pop acts like Super Tramp or 10CC or Alan Parson's Project to the incredible bass and drums pump against sort of fanning guitar strikes and sort of glitchy synth sounds had my head going to other iconic bands, maybe like an amalgam of Portishead / Tame Impala / My Bloody Valentine. You might not get my thought process at first but listen to "89" on repeat and you might feel what I am feeling, that is a complex hybrid of genres and generations.
