"We were hiding up inside a tree / There were cannibals / Painted by disease..."
The bending hypnotic storytelling of "Zombie Song" by Peoria, Illinois band Emily How, lead by singer-songwriter / musician Emily Hough and from their debut full length "How Are You Lately?", has wonderful dynamics, quiet moments, even quieter moments and seismic artful eruptions like a slowly turning psych folk, psych rock beautiful nightmare. How calls this track "cathartic and ethereal journey through the storytelling of a troubled dream" which makes perfect sense. I especially love the verse guitar progs with the degrees of sonic dissonance and the evocative bass line that weaves effortlessly around those progression (not an easy feat). These two elements against kind of sludge pop drumming with How's exquisitely magnetic vocal countenance and dreamy bending lead guitar lines is something else. When the song goes from fever dream to sweaty harrowing eruptions, the "Zombie Song" sonically turns into a "Zombie apocalypse" of sorts.
I have not dived into "How Are You Lately" yet (my hectic schedule is killing me) but this track and the sheer originality of it portends a trippy artful ride. Please don't wait on me. Go to Emily (and her collaborators) Bandcamp and dive in head first.
Zombie Song Lyrics:
We were hiding up inside a tree
There were cannibals
Painted by disease
There was a mob of them
Running toward our house
I tried to stop them
One opened her mouth
She bit me on the hand
Oh I felt the poison
My body turned to waste
My mind it was imploding
And it was beautiful
Baby it was awful
And it was beautiful
Baby it was awful
I never wanted this
Baby it just was
My body's haunted
Something I can't touch
And then I was a murderer
Baby I was sick
I want to taste your blood babe
The thing that makes you live
I bit you on your hand
The sound you made was awful
And then I saw your eyes
Slowly turning purple
And it was beautiful
And it was awful
And it was beautiful
Baby it was awful
And it was beautiful
We were hiding up inside a tree
There were cannibals
Painted by disease
There was a mob of them
Running toward our house
I tried to stop them
One opened her mouth
She bit me on the hand
Oh I felt the poison
My body turned to waste
My mind it was imploding
And it was beautiful
Baby it was awful
And it was beautiful
Baby it was awful
I never wanted this
Baby it just was
My body's haunted
Something I can't touch
And then I was a murderer
Baby I was sick
I want to taste your blood babe
The thing that makes you live
I bit you on your hand
The sound you made was awful
And then I saw your eyes
Slowly turning purple
And it was beautiful
And it was awful
And it was beautiful
Baby it was awful
And it was beautiful
