The heavy metal, darkly drawn, bloody punk distillations of "Obituaries", by New Jersey alt rock outfit Young and Doomed, provides a potent kind of escapism, wonderfully realized but also not for the faint of heart. The track could probably or maybe should probably contain trigger warnings that have to do with Mental Health and specifically Suicide. AND songs from Billie Eilish to Blink-182 and NIN, just to name a few have dealt with depression and suicidal ideation. Stylistically, this young band is incredibly solid, I am loving the total sound, especially the potency of Tyler Rodriguez's guitar sound and Thalia Andrade's killer vocal attack, Sebastian Suazo's heavy handed drumming and Elliot Wyka's throttling bass moves.
In terms of the drop dead heaviness I thought of a whole lot of artists, of various degrees of heaviness / intensities of alt rock and punk. Thought of slices of The Distillers street punk, the LA old school punk of Bad Religion, blends of Slayer-esque metal, AFI goth punk, Ataris skater punk and Nausea type crust punk all blended into something all together different. I am no expert in Punk and certainly no expert in what young people are doing in small cinder block venues in various cities across this country but am really liking what Young and Doomed are putting out.
