Nuunns and the artful alt goth rock conflagration and inner turmoil of "Institution" (Official Video)

"Laughing when theres no one there / Illusions resulting in fiction / Seeking therapy / Taking medicine / What’s the cause for affliction..."

The artful alt goth rock conflagration and inner turmoil of "Institution", by SoCal Inland Empire / LA based alt rock iteration Nuunns, at once feels potently filmic and like a timeless beacon of the dark arts, a collision of 80's goth / death rock / darkwave and more. I am loving the sonics here distilled in such a wonderful way and while Nuunns self records in Hemet, California they are obviously doing everything dead on correct in terms of the universe building. Everything from the propulsive beats, cascading synths, chunky guitars, driving bass, sort of giallo horror Mellotron-esque screaming melodies (love that) and songwriter Omar “Chato” Medina’s expressive vocal countenance that feels adjacent to iconic post punk / goth rock icons such as Peter Murphy from Bauhaus and Stephen Mallinder from Cabaret Voltaire, draws you in and smacks you in the face. There seems to be a bit of a resurgence of this kind of sound and, truth be told, post punk and goth rock never left entirely but I am absolutely loving my first sonic glimpse of Nuunns, as they are one of the best purveyors of this kind of darker / abstract music and their blend is utterly fetching, is staying in my head.

LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):

[Nuunns was born in SoCal- IE & LA. It began with writer Omar “Chato” Medina’s love for 80’s goth/death rock/ dark wave combined with 80s/90’s rock en español. Chato started this project during a trip to Mexico and wrote 10 songs. This project was originally a two piece with Ryan Isabella Farley on drums (now on synths). Soon after, Chato reached out to his best friend Myles Wong and fellow contributor with another project to join the band. Medina, also fronts other projects such as Family of Light and Chato K.I.B.B's which are completely different from one another but his love for music motivates him to pursue different musical journeys. The current line up consist of Chato Medina, Myles Wong (also in FoL), Ryan Isabella Farley, Rob Torres, and Sonny Ruiz.]

[Nuunns official video for “Institution” was filmed in two locations - Riverside, Ca & San Bernardino, Ca. This is the bands second single released on July 22, 2025 at 12am midnight. Filming locations consist of the bands rehearsal studio (Primo Sound Systems) and a warehouse asylum set.]
