"lavender gin and the gun made of brandy / bed full of roses / for when I can't remain standing / waltzing away to the black of your lace / feels so good as it tickles my face..."
The beautiful whimsy and loving embers of "Lavender Gin" by Chicago based Ponyboy and the Idiots draws you in with it's delicate chord structure, woozy lead guitar, mounful orchestrations and dual storytellers that could be from this time but could also be from another. This is to say that the songwriting here, conceptually, emotionally leans into wonky places, beautifully wonky but wonky just the same. I mean on on hand the rolling piano, the fragile guitar lines, the weeping strings and the boy / girl vocal melodies feels folksy in a vintage sort of 40's way and on the other hand framed in modern times the abstractness of it all, "what could I do, what could I say, girl made of matches, boy made of clay", also feels poised somewhere (visually) between Lynch and Wes Anderson and that quirky, loveliness is what I love about it. It is not your usual cup of tea, it eschews derivative songwriting tropes and is very much, it's own thing.
"Lavender Gin" is, in the end, full of surprises, full of romantic intentions and heartbreak.
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
["Lavender Gin" by Chicago indie-rock band Ponyboy and the Idiots (featuring Valaurel and Michael "Goldy" Goldstein) is a bittersweet, introspective track. Driven by longing and sharp lyricism, the song captures the ache of realizing former lovers have become strangers, all framed by evocative imagery of faded romance.]
