Binary Sunset and the heavy post punk / indie rock velvet hammer of "Grands Fonds"

"Aux fonds d’abisses / Ils me manquent à tous / De sons révolus / Un monde inconnu..."

The heavy post punk / indie rock velvet hammer of "Grand Fonds" by Lucerne, Switzerland's Binary Sunset, from their upcoming sophomore album "Après Soleil" (dropping on October 2nd), slaps you in the face 13 seconds in with big foreboding punches but 41 seconds in is courting you with glimmering indie rock embraces. And so it goes, all the while voicing their narrative in French which for me, is a bit like swimming in the dark but I like that. Speaking of swimming in the dark:

LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):

"Binary Sunset return with Grands Fonds, the first single from their forthcoming album, Après Soleil. The track sets the ambivalent mood of the album (Après Soleil), a euphoric fever dream of an endless summer, coupled with the slowly creeping unease that something isn’t quite right.

Inspired by the mysterious oarfish—often referred to as the "doomsday fish"—Grands Fonds tells the story of a creature inhabiting the ocean's deepest waters, a realm where sunlight never reaches. But when the oarfish approaches the light and surfaces, people believe it heralds disaster."

From the beginning to it's conclusion, from top to bottom, "Grands Fonds", in terms of it's total sort of glacial heaviness and shifting sonic tones, blend surfy indie rock, post punk with a lovely dose of prog, tightly wound musicality and massive songwriting surprises. Binary Sunset know how to craft a compelling, artful ride, taking you on a sonic journey while not just being one thing.

LYRICS (French)

Aux fonds d’abisses
Ils me manquent à tous
De sons révolus
Un monde inconnu

Où place mon espoir?
Quand c’est jour ou soir
Tout est toujours noir

Loin de ma maison
Petit bateau
Éclat dans la nuit

Il est temps
Quitter ma ma maison
Qu’est-ce qui m’attend…

LYRICS (via Google Translate)

In the depths of the abyss
I miss them all
Echoes of a bygone time
An unknown world
Where can I place my hope?
Be it day or night
All is always dark
 Far from home
Little boat
A glimmer in the night
 It is time
To leave my home
What awaits me…

The Chicken Wheel will take you to the AP Go Fund Me- and any amount is so appreciated!

"Lots of reverb and DIY" - that's what the Lucerne band Binary Sunset gave us for their press release. Indeed, their music comes with a certain nonchalance, somewhere between surf, post-punk and French protest rock - warm and euphoric, but also impatient and rough.
