The runaway beat and heart of "House on the Hill" by mariek, the solo indie project of Moscow based 24 year old DIY multi-instrumentalist / singer-songwriter Maria, not only fuels darkly dreamy atmospheres but has you wanting to read between the poetic lines. Some of the artistic elements like the sliding chord progression, airy haunting vocal performance, truly propulsive beat, bold bass push and pointed acoustic guitar shimmers and me feeling something between "The Same Deep Water As You" and "Pictures of You" from 1989's Cure album "Disintegration" and melancholy adjacent sonic photos of "Kyoto" from Phoebe Bridgers 2020 "Punisher" album, and when I say this I don't mean any of it in a copycat sort of way or even familiar sonics but more so in adjacent artistic attitudes. Suffice it to say, "House on the Hill" has put mariek firmly on my radar.
She shares this simple line about this track:
"I was on a train when I saw this lonely house out in a massive field. It blew my mind how someone could live so far from the city without even having a fence."
