The See - "Death Death" EP - is expressionistic, horribly beautiful, fever dreamlike

AP Track Review

Death Death is the title track off of an EP by The See. It is best experienced than described which is really the highest compliment. It is bathed in deep industrial meets neo gothic electronica, the low end drones and pulsations are a trip, turn it up and you can feel the vibration in your gut. The time signature shifts are amazing and if you, like me, see your music you might see something in an old German expressionistic film, something David Lynchian, something sci fi scary or horribly beautiful.

The vox move from highly effected to not so much, from guttural moves to quite beautiful falsettos. On other tracks like XKO (the most um commercial sounding) you get a better sense of this man's vox and ability to shift into other modes of music. The sadcore meets dream theater meets proto punk electronica pushed through sideways tropicalia Miata is, well, a fucking trip.

Look at you you're sexy in your Miata   /    Look at you you're sexy in your car  /   Fuck the world it's a razor toothed piranha  /   Fuck the world you're gonna be a star

The synth sounds again mine this truly fever dream sensation and the dada-istic (I think) lyrics feel like the kind that would sweat out of you while you lay curled up in the throes of some illness or possession maybe. I am thinking Beach House on Acid.  Really dig this song and this man's aesthetic. The See with his ability to layer, building on loops of sounds and write in such avant garde ways is my new happy place.

Side notes: The See is the post-industrial project of producer Kyle See based out of Berkeley, California. I conversed with him via email and he is perilously close to the horrible fires in Northern California. We wish him well. He adds:

The Death Death EP is my first foot forward into the building of eerie, neon, cinematic landscapes in which he invites listeners to close their eyes, listen, and explore.
