Ghost Gnotes' dark neo classical post art rock "Alone Is An Earful" moves your inner-self (Official Video)

"free for the ride"

Ghost Gnotes is the musical project / moniker of Denver, Colorado singer-songwriter, musician Luke Mossman ((Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats) who just released his self-titled album (May, 29th 2020). From the first song, Heirloom, that turns slowly on hushed harmonies and ultra textured sounds or acoustic plucked strings and percussion to the slow waltz of Unique floating on deep electric guitar chord shifts that feel like something between blues and jazz grunge (seriously), drums / percussion and synthetic sounds shifting in and out of dissonance and Mossman's beautiful vox to the garden rock / meets lounge rock / meets experimental rock, Again Again, that has a Yorkian patina to it despite the fact that it shifts much more beautifully hopeful and romantic, to Move, that could be a 70's psyche southern folk song, the emotional shifts on this album are many but the overall wash is definitely melancholy but with rays of sunshine penetrating through the dark haziness.

The last song is called Alone Is An Earful. It is the most piano based on the album and maybe the most dark or sadcore in tone but also maybe the most accessible in terms of edging, inching ever so close to a dark pop forward ballad (barely). Once the percussion starts percolating and waves of backing vox ghost the lead vox, the density of sadness is palpable and eventually droning synths flood through in a very cinematic way. As the dark neo classical half stepped piano continues, the ascensions begin more heavily and the song takes on a surreal quality. Beautiful stuff and the perfect last song for this album.

Of the song, Mossman offers: I've always sought solitude. Yet the loneliness that comes with that can be deafening. Is it bringing me peace? Is it conjuring restlessness about a lonely future? This song is about finding my place within my own psyche. Allowing myself to feel totally alone, and allowing that to be ok. Recognizing my social anxiety and owning it. Even well into my 30s, learning it's ok to have the anxieties that I had only attributed to my youth."

The beautifully trippy Official Video for Alone is an Earful was filmed and directed by Rett Rogers.
