James Parm and the beautiful and dark melancholia of "Doing Time"

"You’re in the watchtower at the back of my mind, And I’m stuck doing time"

Grasp onto the plucking guitar string of James Parm's sadly effervescent "Doing Time" and hold on for dear life. The waltzing cadence within Parm's vocal aesthetic offsets his inner turmoil and seemingly imploding psyche. The song constructed with an angst driven feeling of slowly ramping up emotional mayhem is artfully dramatic and when strings and a sort of deconstructed sax solo intertwine it feels like a pivotal moment between a mental breakdown and the realization that everything is going to be ok, not perfect but ok. Parm paints his lyrics darkly:

"Feeling so tired but I can’t seem to sleep,
Life on repeat
But sucking out poison is part of the charm
With you in my arms"

It is as if the narrative is surreal in spots and literal at other times, and whether they are or not can sway the consequences acerbically or deathly, like a Salvador Dali painted by Van Gogh. Either way, James Parm's melancholia is beautiful.

Everyone is dying to meet you
Everyone is dying to meet you
Everyone is dying to meet you

Montreal based James Parm's "Doing Time" is from his latest full length "The Art Of Waiting".
