Name Change and the electro psyche pop spilled milk of "Mirrors Without Reflections"

"to look in the mirror and see your reflection, I don't feel that shit"

Some songs tap you on the shoulder, others spank you on the ass. "Mirrors Without Reflections" by Los Angeles based alt pop singer-songwriter / producer Name Change (aka Johnny Gerrard) does the latter. It is the sort of electro pop with deep funk grooves and the raw vocal aesthetic that, as you listen, feel like you might be eavesdropping on a phone conversation about love going sour. The soul pop guitar jags that somehow feel sort of Carlos Alomar-esque and the purposeful caustic and lo-fi synths that make me think of early MGMT pulls me into the jagged dance sway easily

"Mirrors Without Reflections" is the second single from Name Change's debut EP, "Faces From A Movie" (out May 2021).

Johnny Gerrard, also known as Name Change, is a Los Angeles based multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, artist, and producer. Gerrard’s sound can be described as eclectic, colorful, and ever changing - influenced by his upbringing in Las Vegas producing experimental hip-hop, as well as later fronting a 9 person psych-pop band in Western Massachusetts.

Name Change officially began in the winter of 2017 after Gerrard spent a month living in the woods outside Northampton, Massachusetts, producing what would become one of the first Name Change singles, Circles. Working with close friend and vocalist Unique Alma, Circles saw Gerrard shift from hip-hop centric production to swirling and expansive neo-psychedelia. The singles that followed between 2018 and 2019 show Gerrard experimenting with new sounds while working with close friends and collaborators to incorporate live instruments and densely layered textures, which can be heard on songs Let's Love and Get Free.

Following this formative period comes Name Change’s debut EP, "Faces From A Movie", which sees Gerrard take on the role of primary vocalist while still working closely with key collaborators and friends. Featuring Paris Williams, Date Pit, and long time collaborator Unique Alma, "Faces From A Movie" shows Gerrard beginning to come into his own as not only a songwriter and producer, but also as a vocalist and artist constantly experimenting and finding themselves in the process.
