Asthma Choir and the surreal fevered anxious distortion of "Time Takes The Time Time Takes" (Official Video)

On the unnerving train ride revealed on Berlin based Asthma Choir's Official Video for the artfully anxious "Time Takes The Time Time Takes" things bend that should not, some people stand clearly and some not so much but, rather, pixelated in uncomfortable ways, dangerous bits of reality stretched might make your skin crawl. As expressionistic art, it does feel so turn of the century German but also sort of steam punk-esque futuristic or even more mind numbing as existing in no time at all. A complete midnight fever dream that you never wake from.

I do love the sounds that Rafael Espinoza and Torsten Lang, the divergent minds behind Asthma Choir, craft from a song written in one day, a kismetian flash of creativity which makes for the most interesting music (I think). The vocals are brilliantly dramatic expressions of angst. I imagine the vocal aesthetic like frozen muscles working hard to thaw out. The musical expression here with staggered, epileptic electric guitars against shifting fighting drum beats and a thick phasey bass line with droning organ is brilliant in it's beautiful pulp destruction.

The pair describe the video:

"You're joining two individuals going on a train ride on which little is how it seems and where little seems how you know it. The train of time takes you on mercilessly. Can you trust those other passengers? And the bar man with the hatchet selling rotten fish? All of a sudden the fingers went off and on for a journey on their own and still, the obstacle waiting in the tunnel has to be handled, with or without those fingers.."

Fever dream indeed.

Asthma Choir is the creative junction between Torsten Lang and Rafael Espinoza. They crafted their own musical language, rich with witty sounds and inundating lyrics whose becoming of waveforms make waterfalls flow upwards and children hide under the pillow. Their eclectic band evokes an uneasy und dystopy-romanticizing atmosphere and confronts the listener with the hexed cinematic, yet rickety construction that their sound is.
