"In my city / shifting sands lie under stone / holy waters / orange waves on private shores..."
When global political and societal changes seize our communities in negative ways and even violence looms at the perimeter of our lives it is easy to feel helpless and sometimes even easier to feel forgotten. Seismic shifts effecting people of all stripes seems to be never ending. It is actually easier to deal with the colossal challenges that natural disasters throw at us than battling the nature of man. At least nature has no beating heart and if it kills us, it is does so with no malice, no evil intent.
Hard times. pain and passion inform art and the first track "Mother Tongue" off of Beirut, Lebanon based alt rock trio Postcards' new album "After The Fire, Before The End" captures the myriad of emotions and the atmosphere felt in their hometown over the last few years. As the bands says, the track is:
"A reckoning with our hometown, which has long since been devoid of any sense of safety and comfort."
The track with an accompanying video (crafted by local film makers as are most every Postcards' songs Official Videos) cuts a deep alt rock groove narrated by vocalist Julia Sabra. The effect is sparse arrangements and floating poetry with an emotional gravitas in between rabid, exhilarating explosions of sound, of lead guitar attacks with bass, drums and more guitars as potent sonic rallying cries. The quiet / loud aesthetic highlights each atmosphere. The result is a blend of post rock, post punk, and alt rock pressure cooked by politico rock punches. As a trio, each member of Postcards are multi-instrumentalists comprised of Julia Sabra (lead vox, guitar, synths), Marwan Tohme (guitar, bass, backing vox) and Pascal Semerdjian (drums, sampler, backing vox).
