Atomic Stop and the melancholy garage rock crush of "NTSL" from the "Deep Check" EP

""Sometimes, when you look at me / I think about what we could be / And what we're not..."

The alt indie rock of Washington, D.C. based Atomic Stop is cleanly drawn. This is not to say that they don't have bite, they do. Listen to the songs on 2021's EP "Deep Check" and there is a purity to the frameworks built on late 70's power pop tones with programmed beats and intimate upfront vocals. Your mind might be drawn to the garage rock, indie rock revival sound of The Strokes (in particular) and I even wondered if Atomic Stop is a veiled reference to "Automatic Stop" but the sound here is less produced which is, in the end, a great thing. The vocals are cleanly rendered making them more intimate and way less tropey.

"Deep Check" is full of relationship songs. The second track "NTSL" full of longing and sad puppy dog eyes pulls you back to the crushing pain of youth, maybe when you realize things don't feel right and that love, true love seems to be fucking elusive (for whatever reason) and that you and your other clearly don't fit together. The vocal melodies are dreamy and beautiful while the garage rock tones wrap around each other. The guitar break is killer, absolutely and if it doesn't make your ears perk up I don't know what to say.

The other tracks are equally sonically pure with the same broken themes (for the most part). They sound smart and truthful. They will lift you up despite the melancholy haze they swim in. The final send off song, "You Should Know" is something else, you will want to play it in your car cruising through the depth of night without a destination in mind.
