First Frontier and the full tilt ascent and crash of "Jagged Line"

"it’s three a.m. / the lights blur past this window / high setting in..."

Birmingham (UK) based rock duo First Frontier have dropped the title track from their upcoming debut EP "JAGGED LINE". It is a raw post punkian affair, a constant ramping up of sound, of emotion with Paul's dense guitar that is birthed from tactile guitar chords in solo. I love the sound of those strums at the beginning, it is like the electric guitar has a mic on it so you can hear the chunky pick against those strings. As the song takes off full tilt, the drums are exquisitely noisy with what sounds like a slightly open high hat creating a lovely caustic dinge so when they are snapped shut other things become more clear. Helena's shifting drums, on beat and off add to the fury. Paul's vocal aesthetic is passionate but pretty clean in tone, the offset against all the noise works beautifully, a clear wail you can focus on. There are ambient sounds somewhere in the back, maybe an ambulance siren, maybe not. The heaviness is so incredibly compelling. The track ends like it is the morning after.

This is what the duo have to say about this track:

[If you've ever been on a mad night out that got out of hand, you'll get this song. It's a song about the blurred lines between hedonism, self-control and addiction, and it's all there in the track.
It's about the cyclical nature of drink and drug abuse and the way time itself distorts when you approach the precipice of the void. We wrote the song in a way to mirror that feeling of trying to keep the night going when everybody else going home; that desperate search for small hour thrills, interspersed with peals of drum and bass, hazy taxi rides and street side longing.]

"Jagged Lines" (the song) was engineered and recorded by Nic Bueth (of the band TV Priest) in Hackney Wick , East London, and Dave Beauclerr at Brockley Studios, and produced by First Frontier.

Birmingham-based garage rock duo, First Frontier, make spirited, upbeat music to move to and be moved by. They've unleashed the frenzy of their energetic rhythms and soul-searching, upbeat lyrics on audiences since 2020. Their captivating and catchy music blends broad influences and passes the resulting tunes through a garage rock filter. First Frontier choose hope over fear and play over fight. They are Helena, pounding drums, and Paul, flogging guitar, with both sharing vocal duties; Brummie banter and Northern grit smelted down to forge new music, described by genuine human people as either neo-garage, post-punk and alternative rock. But who really knows what genre is anymore?

H&P met in 2016 when the status quo of the UK was upended and found solace and normality in one another. It wasn’t until 2019 that this started to manifest itself musically rather than as general angst and occasional overeating. They sought the only outlet they knew that could bring us all together and spark joy: upbeat music. A glorious counterpoint to all the negativity and frustration. And thus, dear friends, First Frontier was born. When it all came spilling out in rhythm and verse, everything started to make sense. In this age of one hundred micro-social revolutions, they asked themselves: how can we help? How do we hinder? What’s the glue that connects rather than divides? From these questions came an answer. A debut EP named Just Matter.
