ttypes and the 70's alt pop rock golden shine of "Rock Bottom in Shanghai"

"rock bottom in Shanghai, smoking weed like it's opium..."

"Rock Bottom in Shanghai" by ttypes, the solo indie rock project of Grand Rapids, Michigan songwriter Tim Krauss moves like a 70's pop rocker. From the sort of Bowie-esque bass movements, to the psychedelic garden rock rays of bands like Steeler's Wheel to the broad almost 50's influenced 70's pop sheen that Harry Nilsson and John Lennon minded together and apart, Krauss has crafted a track that feels like it was lost from that era and found now. The lyrics depict a person living in Shanghai, lost in nostalgia over a former lover, smoking far too much weed, and not eating enough food.

Krauss wrote and recorded the keyboard part and lead vocal in diy fashion before handing off the track to Chris Kennedy (current member of Phoenix based No Volcano) who layered in acoustic guitar, bass, electric guitars, hand claps and drums.

ttypes is the solo project of Grand Rapids, Michigan songwriter Tim Krauss. The easiest label for his music would be 'indie', but from there it ranges from ambient instrumental, to piano pop, to rock, to electronic pop, and other styles. He draws a lot of inspiration from the books of Ursula K. LeGuin and writes political music from time to time.
