GLOB and their debut melancholy, dreamy, shining "R U Happy Now?" (Official Video)

"In a state in a / Hotel straight from an / Adler typed page / It's all work and no play..."

"R U Happy Now?" is a great question and an equally great song by Naarm / Melbourne, Australia based GLOB. There is something so utterly emotional and nostalgic and timeless happening here. You can feel the vibrancy, the eclipsing hazy dreaminess of late 70's iconic indie rock and the folk rockish atl rock felt on 90's American College radio. Maybe it is the song itself with the jangle pop guitar, or the Farfisa-esque organ tones, pushed shifting drums wrapped in bass lines, the mellotron tones or Thomas James' somber, artfully drawn vocal aesthetic that has a beautiful back in the throat coarseness (I thought of an amalgam of John Rzeznik and Ian Astbury). There is also an earnest raw sound within the dreaminess and melancholia like The Jesus and Mary Chain and Echo and the Bunnymen pushed through a blender.

As press notes reveal: [Inspired by the novel and film adaptation of ‘The Shining’, ‘R U Happy Now?’ is a story of someone possessed, where the mind is the haunted hotel and the memories are the ghosts that walk its halls.] AND the band has fun with this in the Official Video and with the lyrics like, "In a chase in an / Endless maze where you / Play both prey / And axe murderer crazed..."

"R U Happy Now?" is GLOB's debut single with a full length in the works and that makes me happy.

GLOB is an Australian rock band formed in Naarm/Melbourne.

Locked in due to the pandemic during the bitter Melbourne winter of 2020, Thomas James and Lily Sawenko bunkered down and found solace in what had always soothed them, music, nature and cartoons.

It was the latter love that inspired what would become their new musical identity, named after the four-faced deity from Mars in Adventure Time, Grob Gob Glob Grod. Energised by a newfound love for the lush, 70’s rock stylings of artists such as T. Rex and Fleetwood Mac and driven by the prospect of a new musical project, the still, quiet days of the lockdown saw Thomas and Lily tinkering away at demos of new songs with a fervour and productivity like never before.

With the easing of restrictions and addition of Andrew Cossey (Kaku) on bass and Samuel Drew-Rumoro (Pseudo Mind Hive) on drums, the demos were fleshed out and brought to producer Michael Badger (King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Amyl and The Sniffers) where recording for what would ultimately become GLOB’s debut LP began in earnest.

2022 will see the release of GLOB’s debut single with subsequent singles and a full-length LP to follow.
