"did you throw out all my gifts and get another lover...?"
So I wonder if breaking up with someone in Brooklyn would be better than breaking up with someone in this ruddy, puny mountain town that I live in. I mean, Brooklyn is certainly a cooler place to be sad. I couldn't help but think of this while listening to "Smaller" featuring Margaux by Brooklyn's Modern Diet, the first single from their upcoming full length "The State of Things" set to drop on June 7th, 2022.
Amidst percussive handclaps, exquisitely cool electric guitar shapes, cool side-stick drum beat, tactile bass, the crystal clear vocal harmonies reveal a relationship on the outs, and the sort of resulting barren landscape of it all, "burn it down, I've been alone...". There are cutting lines to relate to like: "Did you throw out all my gifts and get another lover? Did you take down all the pictures of our time together?" but the song is not histrionic but instead feels kind of resolute. The sort of stoic, cool approach doesn't feel cold really, but more like just rising above a situation that in most songs (anyway) is something that crushes, breaks us down. Here there is something incredible, a realization that we all have the power to feel what we want to feel. I love the line, "Am I disappearing, have I disappeared to you? I don't feel any smaller now".
"Smaller (feat. Margaux)" is the first single off Modern Diet's forthcoming LP, "The State of Things" (out June 7, 2022).
The band shares this:
"The whole "The State of Things" LP was recorded in a two week span of "manic creativity and productivity," says Cheriff. "As soon as I started recording, I knew I wouldn't be able to focus on anything else until the record was finished. I don't think I left my apartment more than once or twice. I just kept going until the songs sounded like they did in my head. I wrote some of these songs years ago and it was a relief to finally hear them recorded. Margaux's featured vocal on 'Smaller' was the last element recorded for the record."
Listening again and again, I realize I may have interpreted this song all wrong, that maybe this song is about not seeing that the wool has been placed over your eyes. Either way, the intricate pop sounds are so very interesting and it sort of feels more like a stage play than a song. Cool.
