"I'll love you 'till you understand..."
As my world and the world at large turns and with all the tensions that this entails I fall out of and in love with indie electronica. Sometimes it is the farthest thing from my mind. Other times I crave it, maybe because the escapist nature of artful electronica gives me a respite from all the nastiness out there.
"Silence", the latest offering from UK producer, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Michael Crean is what I need right now. The layered sounds while offering an escape from the darkness also contain their own darkness that envelopes you like some primordial ooze. "Silence" is so immersive it provides a safe space to confront our own thoughts about whatever real demons are out there. It is the emotional pull expressed in Michael's expressive vocal aesthetic wrapped up by what feels like a breathing moving machine (that holds him in it's cage) that offers a panoply of hypnotic sensations and emotions. You might feel distressed listening to it, maybe vanquished even or like a survivor of whatever you interpret these layers of sonic paper to be. Very evocative, very filmic. Surreal. Michael Crean has a way of crafting sounds both synthetic and organic into a wonderful interpretive dance.
Now back to reality.
Silence is the 4th single from Michael Crean's upcoming EP ‘Songs to the Sea’ set to release in July this year.
Michael will be performing a London show on the 29th May to promote the Single and releasing a visualiser online.

Michael Crean is a songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist who creates and records his music entirely himself from his shed in Southwest London. He creates alternative electro-acoustic music that combines influences such as Kae Tempest, Mount Kimbie, Damien Rice and Radiohead. His first two solo releases have been described as ‘Multilayered and emotional’ by Glasse House and 'Enigmatic and Intriguing' by Electric Sound of Joy.
Crean first released music with KALA in 2017. The electro-soul project was featured in Top 5 EPs of the week on Radio1 Xtra and was recorded at Sarm Studios with support from Perfect Songs and Aaron Horn.
Crean started playing classical violin at the age of 4 and piano age 10. But as a teenager became disinterested in classical music and found electronic music, jazz and folk. He trained in Composition at Trinity Laban (with the likes of Moses Boyd, Tom Misch and Nubya Garcia) but left after a year to do a degree in Theatre Making at East 15 Acting School. He created multi-award winning theatre company Sense Assembly and also dipped into film scoring - recently receiving Best Original Score at Mindfield Film Festival and Impact Doc Awards.
After having a break from releasing music, 25-year-old Crean now returns with a tempestuous debut solo EP ’Songs to the Sea’ - a project he has slowly worked on over the last 5 years. This unique 7-track concept EP combines spoken-word, surreal stories of isolation and obsession, with deep electro-acoustic textures. It also displays his vast multi-instrumental skills, having arranged and performed all the parts himself, and combined this with his distinctive and detailed electro-acoustic production.
During 2021, Crean released a series of unique live looping covers on Youtube which have racked up thousands of views.
