Derek Senn and the SB8 politico punk Fuck You of "Texas Legislators"

"Texas legislators white christian men / get voted into office and pass legislation / so let me get this SB8 straight if you ejaculate in the lone star state..."

I could say a lot about "Texas Legislators" by singer-songwriter, musician Derek Senn (from San Luis Obispo, California) and if you read American Pancake you know that I usually do when writing my thoughts about the songs that I choose to share. But in the case of this song, Senn says it all in the press notes:

"This song is a pointed critique of the Texas Legislators who passed Senate Bill 8 (SB8) which outlawed abortion after six weeks and deputized citizens to sue those who aid and abet someone in receiving an abortion. It is a scorching rocker and based upon the merits of being just a song it totally rules, but if your politics do not align with women having the right to choose then you probably will not like this song."

AND that is the thing, I am pro-life but also emphatic that a woman's right to choose is exquisitely the only position that you can take if you are moral, logical, and fixated on a person's individual rights, God given or not God given. I also believe (in such a powerful, strident way) that no man has the right to tell a woman what to do with her own body in regards to bringing a life or not bringing a life into this world.

Derek Senn's lyrics on "Texas Legislators" are so incredibly impactful and important. He wields his lyrical sword with humor (to be sure) but in a way to drive his thoughts home, to nail them down. The punk rock sort of Stooges aesthetic is a perfect genre here and Senn's vocal countenance had me thinking of an amalgam of Iggy Pop and Jim Carroll. The snarl, brooding fuck you vocal aesthetic is fucking perfect.

"Texas Legislators" is from Senn's recently released full length "The Big Five-O" and his partners in crime to Senn's vox / guitar work are Damon Castillo on electric guitar, bass and Jason Slota on drums, tambourine.

Again, the words are so incredible that I want them fully on display on this review:

Texas legislators white christian men
get voted into office and pass legislation
so let me get this SB8 straight if you ejaculate in the lone star state
and impregnate your tinder date and your tinder date sets a date to terminate
you’re allowed to sue the taxi driver who took your hookup to the medical clinic
you get to extort those who help her abort
I don’t know sounds like more malarkey from the patriarchy
it bears repeating so I’ll say it again if these sanctimonious dudes were women
with uterine walls and menstrual cramps
I think we’d see more reproductive rights champs
but they’re dudes and being a dude is great
dudes don’t have to menstruate but dudes get to legislate
what you the woman can and can’t do once the legislature ejaculates in you
Texas legislators
sanctimonious men
they get voted into office and pass legislation
I’m a fan of a good flowchart let’s start first thing do you have a vagine
yes or no, no then shut up yes then progress to the next thing
next thing are you opining about your own vagine
yes or no, no then shut up
if it’s a yes feel free to express anything about your own vagine
Texas legislators sanctimonious men
do you have a vagine it’s a simple yes or no question
it’s rhetorical too I know the answer and so do you
and the answer is no so shut the fuck up
Texas legislators

Derek Senn has been at it for a while now, honing his songwriting craft and sharing his musings with the world. His travels have taken him far and wide, from a yearlong foreign exchange in Quito, Ecuador, to a six-month bicycle trip through western South America, to a three-month foray to track down a girl in Argentina he fancied. Several of his songs refer to these adventures, though more recently, they address the world—and children—he’s created with that girl (turns out she fancied him too). The navigation of the quotidian trials and travails of family life imbue his songs now: child-rearing, putting food on the table, yelling at the dog.

Derek and his wife formed a punk rock duo called The Wedding Industrial Complex, but sometime around 2009, she tossed her drumsticks into the crowd for the last time and called it a day. Since then, Derek has released three critically acclaimed solo albums. His most recent offering, "How Could A Man,” is groovy and catchy; the lyrics are funny and heartfelt (often in the same song) and wholly original. “How Could A Man” is his most realized album to date, and the title track is a love song for the ages.
