something in the lake and the two way scratched mirror of "Closer"

"...the distance between slowly decreasing..."

I like moody, brooding music. I like songs that take you on an inner ride with tension and subtle dramatic turns or heavy tumultuous spirals downward. You get all this within the glacial haze of "Closer" by 5 piece London alternative avant rock band something in the lake. The track is the second single from their upcoming debut EP "Numina" and it stirs in picked guitar chord shapes that seem to stair step up and down and sideways while other instrumentation and sounds create dissonant ghost like hands that push back. Leon Benson's broken vocal countenance feels as earnest and dire as it does artful and as explosive drum fills bounce off the walls, dark bass steps, and bending (maybe synth) textures create caustic sort of pressure cooking elements, you feel tugged in many directions.

Benson shares:

“The song is an examination of something I saw in a dream. I think I was confronted with a personification of all my negative characteristics. It was an elderly, decrepit figure, a “Mr.Hyde” archetype. I later got into Carl Jung and learned that this is what he calls “the Shadow”. I think it’s important to try and understand that idea”.

"Numina" portends more deep reflections and soundscapes dipping into jazz fused post / art rock, noise and folk and whatever something in the lake conjure up to stir their senses, inspire themselves and us as listeners.

This is the second single from Something in the Lake’s upcoming EP “Numina”. Inspired by a twisted reflection of himself that singer Leon Benson saw in a dream, “Closer” is a dark, brooding track that describes Leon helplessly chasing this figure in an attempt to understand more of his subconscious.

Leon:

“The song is an examination of something I saw in a dream. I think I was confronted with a personification of all my negative characteristics. It was an elderly, decrepit figure, a “Mr.Hyde” archetype. I later got into Carl Jung and learned that this is what he calls “the Shadow”. I think it’s important to try and understand that idea”.

Something in the Lake continued their partnership with producer Harri Chambers (Yard Act, Oscar Lang, Matilda Mann) to record this tense track from their upcoming Debut EP “Numina”. It combines elements of jazz, noise and folk to create a hauntingly honest experience.
