Los Angeles based Westerner's sonic arts is a master class in extra sensory perception. Take, for example, "Hell is Dull", from their latest full length "Kali Yuga Kama Sutra", that feels daringly like disco, like early 80's New York new wave (cabaret) dance funk, like late 90's blendo indie rock. In fact, in my humble opinion, it should be added retroactively to the 1996 Romeo + Juliet soundtrack and, to me, has the sonic nucleic acid of The Cardigan's "Love Fool", Everclear's "Local God" and Kym Mazelle's "Young Hearts Run Free" all at once (all songs from the soundtrack by the way). It also makes me think of the art rock-esque things, of indie sonic theatricality of Bryan Ferry, of Duran Duran. Mixed wonderfully by Jules de Gasperis (Low Hum, James Supercave) and Mastered (masterfully) by Vlado Meller (Kanye West), it is Studio 54 minus the cocaine (COKE IS BAD) and Snake Plissken and Pipeline riding a tsunami.
Westerner is Cooper Bombadil (vocals, guitar and synth), Brandon Valerino (bass, synth and backing vocals) and Mike Gattshall (drums and samples).

Westerner is an indie rock band with neo-psychedelic and synth pop flavors in the vein of Foals or Glass Animals. Their songs are at once danceable and mesmerizing. Funky beats and occasional electronics are applied to a showy indie-rock style that can either be danced to or appreciated on a purely musical level. Some very savvy pop tunes are deftly mixed with space and synth rock elements. It’s a compliment to say that their music is hard to compare to anybody else’s, but this is definitely life-force-celebrating music, both exuberant and infectious.
They've racked up over 90k followers on TikTok, spins on LA's KCSN 88.5FM and Amazing Radio (Tobi Lynn, Jose Galvan), and rave reviews from publications like BuzzBandsLA and American Pancake. They currently work with world-famous mastering engineer Vlado Meller (Kanye West, Paul McCartney), and mixing engineer Jules de Gasperis (Low Hum, James Supercave).
The trio consists of Cooper Bombadil on vocals, guitar and synth, Brandon Valerino on bass, synth and backing vocals, and Mike Gattshall on drums and samples. Their debut album, "Unreal City," was a sci-fi concept album composed of catchy pop songs, surreal sounds, and strange characters. Starting in 2020, the band began releasing a new song every month. 2022 will see the release of their new studio album, "Kali Yuga Kama Sutra," on August 19th through Coconut Spaceship Records. They will also release animated music videos for every song on Unreal City culminating in a psychedelic, musical movie in the tradition of Pink Floyd’s The Wall, or Heavy Metal.
