Dylan Marx and the hypnotic emotional flooding of "Spiral(ing)"

"spiraling kind of hell / magazine behind paywall / ordinary blues and you / blissfully out with it..."

Listening to the sustained melancholia of "Spiral(ing)" by San Francisco Bay area bred, Los Angeles based musician / artist Dylan Marx ( formerly Moths) and I wonder if this languid song was improvised or if it is a premeditated meditation (of sorts). It is heavily somber but within the acoustic guitar strums that sometimes feel tired or latent as saxophones are swirling around, it almost feels like the plodding forgiveness of nature itself, of thing growing at a glacial pace but always reaching for the light. Dylan's voice feels emotionally wrought like the music but (in it's total state) it is hypnotic and beautifully somber. If listened to on repeat you may feel reborn or you might end up in the fetal position on the floor. It all depends on your state of mind I suppose.

Press notey stuff:

This is the final song off of Dylan's new record, "Romu Otsimine or Black Oil Sunflower for Wild Birds" with a music video directed by Bibiana Gonzalez. The song takes on a mournful tone, with saxophones swirling around Dylan's musings on how we occupy ourselves in times of sadness and frustration. It is deeply poetic and minimalist in its lyrical approach, but as a result leaves room for the listener to place themselves in the song.

Ultimately, I find that if I dwell in the sadness of things it makes me remember all the cherished moments that much more.
