Watching or should I say, getting drawn into the Official Video for "Eraser" by divergent Irish artist, singer songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Katie Kim is both sonically and visually compelling in that sort of, 8 year old self holding onto your mother's skirt and saying, "I don't think we're in Kansas anymore" or maybe even, "Mommy, I don't think I like Kansas anymore". The melancholy, maybe even, hopeless distorted faces that come across as someone's living dolls feels rather Blumhouse but the sonics taken on their own don't feel that dark but dark enough. Katie Kim's exquisitely magnetic voice sometimes has the timbre of an artist like Kate Bush but the simmering diamond that is her voice feels more multi-faceted from an emotional standpoint. And while I cannot discount the wonderful walls of sound, orchestral in tone on it's tip toes like a broken ballet, it is Kim's vocal countenance that stands in that spotlight in the dark beckoning us all in with a curled finger.
I feverishly searched for lyrics to "Eraser" written by Katie Kim in order to absorb every reveal but I could not locate them. For now I can live without them. The dark center of the Official Video as directed by both Orla Maher and Katie Kim might induce mild nightmares but the song itself and my sonic Rorschach-ian reaction will overflow within me in a bigger way. I am quite stunned by my reaction to Kim's voice and melodies but I will try not to be obsessed.
"Eraser" is from Katie Kim's fifth full-length album "Hour of the Ox" released on her own I Actually Like Music label.
From Press notey stuff:
‘Eraser’ was written and recorded while in the process of moving to New York and subsequently mixed after returning to Ireland during the pandemic. It forms a crucial part of the album’s story of longing and desperation for something different. An incompatible, disparate but devoted view of the world, told through lush strings, an orchestra of synthesizers, and live minimalist style drums.
Produced, arranged and recorded by Katie Kim and long-time collaborator John “Spud” Murphy (Black Midi / Caroline / Lankum), mood is central to the expansive musical landscape throughout Kim’s releases. Whether they be bedroom, field or studio recordings. Darkened corners, icy atmospheres and hypnotic knife edge soundscapes. Piano chords stretch to infinity. Cinematic in scope and tectonic in delivery, many have used her scores in documentaries, film and TV to deliver their stories.
'Eraser' is taken from Kim's eagerly-awaited album 'Hour of the Ox' which will be released on 9 Sept on limited edition vinyl with exclusive pre-orders available now. The album launch takes place on 10 September at The Button Factory in Dublin. This will be Katie Kim’s only headline Dublin show for the rest of 2022, tickets are available at www.eventbrite.ie/e/katie-kim-hour-of-the-ox-album-launch-tickets-352492684107

"Eraser" will be on play for a long time and seem into me by emotional osmosis. You might call it gothic dark wave, or baroque pop, or avant orchestral pop or a blend of all of those things but the song will surely get under you skin.
