"Early Retirement" by Mount Vernon, Washington singer-songwriter, musician Tim Mechling feels drenched in gloom, the kind of gloom that invades your soul when your haven't come to terms with life, with existence. From Tim's concept album "The Decline of the Flies and the Rise of the Spiders" that feels drawn from times before and feels steeped in the palor of American Gothic atmospheres, "Early Retirement" conjured up (in my mind) the dark rotting essence of nature manifested (for me) as human figures that look like something from Tim Burton's and Guillermo del Toro's imagination (hand in hand). The mournful violin made me think of music and the monsters, of 1935's iconic "Bride of Frankenstein".
The dark whimsy of "Early Retirement" is a story of two old men escaping a retirement home: "They left the old folks home and ran through the night to the land of the young and urban delight / Soon they got lost in a world they forgot now they are trapped in the freedom they sought". An old Twilight episode popped in my mind and the caveat of 'hoping what you wish for' and how that doesn't always work out.
