Stepping to the dreamy urgency of "Surprise" by New York based Laveda is a heady experience. There are sounds that pull you as much back as they do forward. Ali Genevich's expressive vocals which somehow feel soft and hard at the same time set against a churning river rush of guitar jaggedness and bass / slamming drum attack is a formula for something that washes over you completely. Within the heaviness there are strains of other genres and atmospheres. I feel 80's illusions to post punk indie, to folk to twee pop as well. Like an amalgam of early Smashing Pumpkins, burgeoning Sonic Youth and The Cranberries, there is a sense of angst, youthful questions and growing up during hard times.
At Laveda's core are founding members Jacob Brooks and Ali Genevich (rounded out live by the amazing talents of Dan Carr (bass) and Joe Taurone (drums). This is what Ali and Jacob have to say about "Surprise".
Sonically, Surprise is the bright and happy song of the record. Lyrically it embodies a lot of my personal feelings that came after I graduated from college in the same year the pandemic hit. I couldn’t help but feel low for a while. Once I came out of my writer’s block everything I wrote either had this big sad mood or it was super nostalgic. The majority of tracking for the album was done while we stayed on a ranch in Altadena CA (which is about 30 min outside of Los Angeles). I think it was a very therapeutic process and helped us find some new meaning in a lot of the songs, it definitely did for Surprise.” -Ali Genevich (Vocals, Guitar)
“I got out of bed super early one morning with a melody that I heard in a dream. I immediately took to garage band on my phone and made a little loop in maybe 15-20 minutes. After I showed Jake he totally wanted to develop it more so we transferred it into logic and finished a demo.

“The lyrics are meant to juxtapose the happy sunshine feeling throughout the song. Surprise is about dealing with loneliness and loss in this modern age. The overall happy sound represents how bright and happy we represent ourselves on social media. In reality, everyone’s depressed and are stressed over the rapidly devolving state of society.” -Jake Brooks (Guitar)

On their 2020 debut album What Happens After, Laveda draw a post-apocolyptic landscape through layers of colorful sound and ethereal melodies. The band fuses polished pop song clarity with a 90's guitar driven sound reminiscent of groups like The Sundays or My Bloody Valentine. Founding members "Jacob Brooks and Ali Genevich explore the great yawning unknown. From the freedom and uncertainty that rests at your fingertips or the distant and possibly desolate future, they capture adolescent restlessness with big walls of sound and a dreamy melodious warble" writes Toronto based blog Ohestee. NYC's Look At My Records! calls Laveda "a young band with a fully realized voice and perspective, and What Happens After couldn’t feel timelier."
Brooks and Genevich spent most of the summer and fall of 2021 in Los Angeles, working again with producer Dylan Herman (Beck, Pynkie) on their second full-length LP. The record is anticipated to release this fall on NY/VT based label Paper Cup and features the full live band, including Dan Carr (bass) and Joe Taurone (drums) throughout.
