Red Maker and the punchy indie rock / power pop swings of "Slip"

"Got to find some solution / For what calls me day and night / Because I can't live for my chains time to find a timely grave for my vice..."

The running descending bass and guitar lines as "Slip" by South Dakota's indie rock outfit RED MAKER has my head going back to 80's iconic power pop artists like L.A.'s 20/20 but as the sound gets heavier and Morgan Harris's vocal wail that feels more passionate than a lot of the highly stylized 80's Brit drawl, the sensibility feels more emotional, more pained, more post grunge 90's.

"Got back from a bad time when I said I wasn't going back // It's about every day that I say I won't do that again // Tried to find a trash bin for my stash but it's just so hard to find // Takes my cash takes my time but it can't swallow what left I have in life"

"Slip" is from the band's eponymous debut album and has those hard edges for a reason as RED MAKER says it is "A POV into the life of an addict finding their way through their chains to freedom". I like the musical cross generational blending, I love the emotional passion, I love the tom tom beats, punchy guitar and bass maneuvers as a framework for the emotional bloodletting.

"Makes my mama so sad // When are you going to clean up your act // Makes my papa so mad // How hard can it be to stay on track // Well here and there I slip up // Like I'm walking out on ice // But I find ways around it // Can't go on my entire life // Got to find some solution // For what calls me day and night // Because I can't live for my chains time to find a timely grave for my vice"

"Slip" is a great track full of musical and emotional punches. For me, the surprise here is the artful decision to not fully descend into darker chord progressions which might be the tendency for some in terms of the subject matter. RED MAKER goes for a juxtaposition of tones and temperaments that in the end makes for a more moving experience.

Compared to bands such as Hockey Dad, Hippo Campus, The Cribs, Built to Spill, Pinegrove, and French Kicks, South Dakota indie-pop/rock band RED MAKER is known for their wide range of sound, from catchy and carefree listening to hard-hitting and fast-paced energy.

Morgan Harris (guitar, vocals), Kyle Dowling (guitar expert), and Sam Di Vito (bass, drums, and vocals) have taken their love of an eclectic range of records to influence and form a unique and diverse discography. Inspired by the pop giants of the 60’s, the restless punks of the 80’s, the world-changing wave of 90’s alternative, and the nostalgic revivalist of early 2000’s garage rock, Red Maker has taken the sounds of the past and found out how to deliver it in a new and refreshing package.

EXPERIENCE LIFE is the message this band sends in every song. More than just a “live life to the fullest” motto thrown lazily around, they preach to experience life at its fullest. All of life’s phases, the ups and downs, twists and turns, and even the good days or bad days. Whatever life has, Red Maker has a song to match perfectly to the moment.
